Information about accessibility

Welcome to St Alfege Church and we hope you enjoy your visit whether you come to worship and/or to explore this wonderful Nicholas Hawksmoor church and learn about our rich heritage.

Welcomers and/or Open Church volunteers are here to assist should you require information or help.

Ramp access
There is currently a ramp which is steep to access the south entrance.   Wheelchair users will need assistance. There are five steps at the main west entrance, so people using walking aids or pushing a buggy may find it easier to use the ramp.     Please let the church welcomers or Open Church volunteers know to ensure the south door is open.

Please let a welcomer know if you would like to receive communion where you are sitting.

Induction loop
An induction loop for people who are hard of hearing is in operation at services and concerts.

Braille

A number of items are available in braille at the welcoming desk which is on your left hand side as you enter the church through the main door.   This includes our hymn book (Hymns Ancient and Modern New Standard)  and also copies of the weekly Eucharist; Baptism; and Midnight Mass.   There are also large print versions of the hymn book and Eucharist at the welcome desk. Our welcomers would be delighted to provide you with braille copies of services and/or help you navigate the building.  Please let us know if we can assist you.

Communion
If for any reason you would prefer to receive communion where you are sitting, please let a welcomer know.

Parking
There is no public parking at St Alfege Church but it is possible for those requiring disability access to arrange a day permit via the office.

Toilets
At present, we only have one accessible toilet in the church hall. The toilet in the church cannot accommodate people with mobility needs or aids, nor does it offer baby changing facilities.

Assistance dogs
Assistance dogs are welcome in the church at all times and other areas. Water can be made available for them.

Improving access

We are working to improve access to and facilities in the church as part of our Heart of Greenwich Place and People  project supported by the Heritage Lottery Fund. This will include the development of a new access ramp, a new entrance visible from the street on the north side facing the town centre and two fully accessible toilets.
