Believing in Poetry

A series of short talks and recitals on individual poets or poems to accompany the beauty of language and music in ‘cathedral style’ choral evensong according to the Book of Common Prayer at 6.30pm on the last Sunday of every month (excluding August when there is no service and November which will be the Advent Service). 

Come to be still, pray and meditate in a service lasting not more than an hour which expresses the best of the Anglican tradition, originating with Archbishop Thomas Cranmer and Tudor composers such as Thomas Tallis who was organist at this church.

May 28th Speaker: Frances Shaw on A E Houseman

June 25th Speaker: David McEvoy on the poetry of Eleanor Farjeon

July 30th Speaker: Clare Hatcher on RS Thomas

(no service in August)

September 24th Speaker:  Suley Muhidin, commemorating World Peace Day

October 29th  Speaker:  Hannah on Christina Rosetti, or religious poetry from women 

(No evensong on 26th November; Advent Service of music and readings on Sunday Dec 3rd
