Friends of St Alfege Church
Just over 25 years ago a group of people decided to set up the Friends of St Alfege Church. They were all people who loved the church and took a warm interest in it as the parish church of Greenwich, and they wanted to consider how they might best support it. Although everyone didnít necessarily worship regularly at St Alfege, they all appreciated the importance of the church in the life of the local community.
The Friends support the church in any way they can. The groupís financial resources come from annual subscriptions paid by members (almost 100), and from regular fund-raising events.
A committee of chairperson, treasurer and three other members meets regularly to
discuss possible projects for funding and to organise social and fundraising events.
Recent fundraising events have included a pilgrimage to Canterbury Cathedral,
parties at membersí homes and at the Vicarage, a lecture by a local historian, and
Christmas concerts. Funds have been used to support the Advent Windows project, to make a gift to a Curate at his ordination, to give resources to the youth club and to the church school, to buy new robes for young servers, to clean altar linen and to contribute to the flower fund.
Since its start, the Friends has become an important part of and a great benefit to
life at St Alfege Church. If you would like to be involved in this contribution to the
enhancement of the church, please do join the Friends. You can call the Church
Office or pick up a form at the back of church.
